Oversee the conduct of the Human Research Ethics Committee at Charles Darwin University. 

About the Position
As the Chair of the Human Research Ethics Committee, you will be responsible or the overall conduct of the Charles Darwin University Human Research Ethics Committee (CDU-HREC). The position works closely with the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation (DVCRI) and the Office for Research and Innovation (ORI) to provide professional leadership to the committee members and encourage best practice in the reviewing of project applications with a human research ethics component. 

The Chair will be expected to attend all CDU-HREC meetings either in person or virtually. The Chair may conduct some work remotely such as liaison with Committee members, finalising actions as delegated by the HREC, and advice sessions and discussions with researchers as required. The Chair also completes Executive Review and approval of applications that involve negligible ethical risk in conjunction with the Deputy Chair and/or nominated members of the HREC.

The role also works closely with the Research Ethics and Integrity Officer to coordinate the meeting agenda, lead a suite of training programs in Human Research Ethics and make recommendations to the VC and President in relation to HREC membership.  

The Chair position is also an ex-officio member of the Charles Darwin Research Committee which meets seven times per annum.

About You
To be successful, you will require:

  • A PhD level qualification/s in a relevant discipline (or related discipline) including original, innovative, and distinguished contributions to research, scholarship and teaching as demonstrated through sustained and distinguished performance.
  • Previous experience as a Chair or Deputy Chair of a relevant Committee.
  • Awareness of relevant Codes and expectations in research integrity and the responsibilities of institutions and researchers, including as research integrity matters relate to human research ethics practices. 
  • Actively interested in human research ethics and a deep and sound understanding of the principles underpinning ethical research, including knowledge and experience in the application of the National Statement on the Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2023).
  • A minimum PhD level qualification/s in a relevant discipline (or related discipline) including original, innovative, and distinguished contributions to research, scholarship and teaching as demonstrated through sustained and distinguished performance.
  • Evidence of the skills and knowledge required to master the requirements for sound and effective ethical review. 
  • Demonstrated competence and effectiveness in presiding at committees.
  • Demonstrated governance knowledge.
  • Recognised by peers to have engaging and clear communication skills.
  • Experience in time and priority management in consultation with administration staff.
  • Understanding and sensitivity regarding respect for and dignity of people, including children, the members of diverse cultural groups and people who may be exposed to disadvantage.

Remuneration 
Appointment to this role will be at Research Focused Academic Level D. The base salary will be in the range of $154,069 – $168,544 per annum. The total remuneration package will be in the range of $180,260 - $197,196 per annum (pro rata), including 17% superannuation.
